A Visual Journey: How We Got Our English Bible

Tony Cooke

Suppose someone is beginning to read the Bible and they ask you this question: “I’m just starting to read the Bible, but how did such an ancient book make it into the English language, and is it trustworthy?” Could you give that person a reasonable, well-thought-out answer? Perhaps you have always accepted the truth of the Bible by faith, but what if someone with a different background is looking for credible, historical information on the process that Scripture has undergone to be in our hands today?

While recently preaching for Pastor Dennis Cummins at Experience Church in Puyallup, WA, I stopped by Faith Baptist Church in Tacoma, WA, and visited The Biblical Heritage Exhibit. In the following video, you will hear from Pastor Mark Smith. He and his team have developed a fascinating exhibit that takes you step-by-step from the early Greek to English translations of the Bible. This is a visual journey, allowing you to see their many beautiful and painstakingly created facsimiles of numerous versions of Scripture as it has come down through the ages.

There are three sections of BHE’s website that I especially encourage you to check out:

  1. The Timeline that shows major people and events tracing the transmission of the Bible from the time of Wycliffe (1395) through the King James Version (1611).
  1. The section showing the beautiful facsimiles of various translations of Scriptures throughout the ages.
  1. Decorative sculptures of many of the great key figures throughout history who have been instrumental in faithfully transmitting the Bible from generation to generation. This particular link is to their Reformation section, but be sure to check out their other art sections as well.
